Reading techniques

Reading techniques are key to understanding what you are actually reading when looking at a text. the four main types of techniques are:

  • skimming
  • scanning
  • extensive
  • intensive
These techniques when trying to understand a text are vital due to them giving you the ability to grab a better picture of the text. skimming is used ideally for note taking, you will quickly skim over the text picking out relevant information out in your mind that you think is important. this could benefit a reader due to not filling his mind up with words that aren't necessarily relevant and also reading a large text often leads to boredom.

Scanning is prefect for when you have a set topic for what you need to pick out from the text, skim over the text picking out key information which is only relevant to the set topic that you have chosen. this is extremely helpful due to grabbing the information that you need from a text quickly and not getting sidetracked with other topics.

Extensive and intensive are mainly due to 'how' you read the text. having the right mind set is key when reading a text due to if your not really bothered about it then information will not soak in the mind. intensive is reading with high concentration followed by no distractions where as extensive is just having a general mind set of enjoying reading it, you tend to remember things you like so it adds on for a better study when reading through text.
